Reducing Your Winter Bills In 2021
Year on year we notice that our winter bills are creeping higher and higher. In 2021, we are about to notice them soaring higher with more energy companies going under and the energy market becoming the most competitive it has been in decades. So how can you improve your home to help you reduce those bills (or at least keep them lower than they otherwise will be with the increases) with C&W Direct?
Start Internally
Here at C&W Direct, we could simply bombard you with big-ticket suggestions as to how to improve the energy efficiency of your home this winter. However, we want you to be aware of the things that you can do inside your home to help those big-ticket changes.
Firstly, take a look at the hangings around your windows. For example, if you only have blinds around your windows, these will allow more cold air into the room than curtains. You can also get thicker curtains ready for the winter.
Where you have external doors, consider using a draught excluder to the base of the door. You can also get draught excluders that attach to the inside of your frame for all around the door. However, it is worth noting that many of these are only suitable for the short term, so may only last one season. But they can be a great quick fix. You may also want to consider a door curtain, similar to what you would have around your windows.
External Checks
You may find that some of your draughts are caused by issues outside of your home. For example, you may find that the pointing around your brickwork has started to deteriorate, allowing the elements between your bricks and into your home.
Likewise, you may find that the bricks or cement around your existing windows is the cause of your draught.
The Big-Ticket Changes
You may have already tried all of the above. Or you may be at the point where your doors and windows have already seen out their life expectancy and now it’s time to look at replacing them. Here is where we can help you at C&W Direct.
There may have been more advances in windows since you last swapped out the windows on your home. This includes the introduction of triple glazing. Previously, double glazing was the bee’s knees for your energy efficiency. Well add an extra pane, and you get even better efficiency.
Taking your windows another step further, our Optitherm Energy Efficient Windows can improve the efficiency of your windows by up to 20% (this includes keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in the summer).
Aside from your windows, you may also find that your door is letting in a draught. Older uPVC doors can start to shrink over time due to the material drying out (they may also crack). This means that you tend to notice their age more and more as time goes on. If this sound like your door, it might be worth the investment in a new door, before your old door causes more issues.
Modern uPVC doors have had improved greatly, with many now having an internal core to help strengthen them greatly. It can also improve their lifespan.
Modern options for doors also includes composite doors. These doors can be 100% customised to suit your home and style. From the colour of the door (which doesn’t fade in the sun) to the finish of the door, the shape and configuration of the windows, and even the finishing touches. Check out our Door Designer for more information.
