Should I Choose an Orangery or a Home Extension?

07 Aug 2022

Having a Conservatory, Orangery or Extension added to your home is a great way of doing home improvement. Not only does it breathe fresh life into your home, but it also gives you some extra living space.

Whether you’re extending your home for a new open-plan kitchen or creating somewhere to relax and entertain guests, C&W Direct can help. We are the leading provider of energy-efficient orangeries and conservatories in Stafford, Cannock and Lichfield.

To give you a better idea of your options, we’ve put together this handy guide to give you all the information you need in one place.

What is the difference between an orangery and an extension?

An orangery can be thought of as a mix of a traditional conservatory and a home extension, made with brick-built pillars, punctuated with windows. From the outside, they tend to look more like traditional rooms than conservatories. Orangeries are typically designed with a raised glass roof that floods your living space with natural light.

It’s this window punctuation that separates orangeries from traditional extensions. As their name suggests, orangeries were originally used as a place where you could grow exotic fruit, meaning that they had to be as warm as possible. During the summer, there’s no better way of heating a space than placing it under glass — hence the windows.

Generally speaking, an extension is more ‘solid’ than an orangery. However, you will need to invest in proper interior lighting if you’re having an extension installed, as the space may come across as dark or uninspiring without it.

Which One Looks Better?

Instead of thinking of an orangery as a garden room that is tacked onto the back of your home, think of it as a natural extension to your home – albeit one which has access to a lot of natural light.

Orangeries from C&W Direct are available in a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles. These styles can be further made bespoke to match the look of your property. This allows you to have a roof style that complements your home’s interior and exterior appearance.

Whilst a traditional extension can be tied in seamlessly with the right brick match, its flat roof or tiled roof will not boast the same appeal as an orangery. Homeowners we have worked with in the past have chosen to have an orangery built instead of an extension due to the stunning glazed roof they provide which becomes a stunning focal point for their home.
